A Press Brake Is Accepted by the Bend, Not by the Power Light

Correct press-brake startup requires safe unloading, final placement, floor and electrical readiness, hydraulic and mechanical checks, tooling setup, ram/backgauge calibration and test bends using an agreed material and geometry.

Rigging warning: press brakes can be front-heavy or have a concentrated center of gravity. Forklift capacity must account for load center, fork length, machine weight and pickup geometry—not only the truck's headline rating.

Installation Sequence

1. Shipping condition

Inspect frame, ram, backgauge, guards, cabinets, cylinders, controls, tooling and loose accessories before unloading.

2. Unloading plan

Confirm weight, center of gravity, approved lifting points, fork spacing, crane or machinery mover and clear travel path.

3. Final position

Provide service clearance, operator space, material support area and safe access to cabinets and hydraulic components.

4. Level and foundation

Check floor capacity, machine level, twist and anchoring requirements according to the assigned model documents.

5. Utilities

Verify voltage, phase, disconnect, grounding, rotation where applicable, hydraulic oil and required air supply.

6. Mechanical checks

Inspect lubrication, ram movement, cylinders, hoses, clamps, tooling alignment, crowning and backgauge travel.

7. Calibration

Establish reference points, backgauge position, ram depth, angle correction and controller settings for the installed tooling.

8. Test bends

Run agreed material, thickness, length and bend geometry; document angle, dimensions and any corrections.

Buyer Readiness

Item Required before technician travel
Machine access Truck access, unloading equipment, door clearance, inside travel path and final position marked.
Floor Adequate capacity and condition, with anchor or foundation requirements reviewed when applicable.
Electrical Assigned voltage and phase, correctly sized disconnect/branch circuit and licensed electrical completion.
Hydraulic and air Correct oil specification/quantity and clean dry air when required by the machine or tooling.
Tooling Agreed punch, die, clamps, adapters and any special forming tools physically available.
Test material Known material grade, thickness, bend length, grain direction and drawings or sample parts.
Operators Designated personnel available for the full training and handoff period.

Test-Bend Acceptance

Acceptance should be written before startup. A useful protocol identifies the actual punch and die, V-opening, material, thickness, bend length, target angle, flange dimensions, bend sequence and measurement method.

Weak test Production-relevant test
Machine cycles without an alarm. Machine completes agreed parts within stated angle and dimensional criteria.
Short coupon with unknown tooling. Representative bend length, actual tooling and known material.
One center bend only. Tests appropriate to machine length and application, including consistency checks where agreed.

Operator Handoff

  • Safe startup, shutdown and emergency-stop checks.
  • Controller job setup and backgauge operation.
  • Punch/die selection, loading and clamping.
  • Tonnage, V-opening, bend allowance and collision awareness.
  • Angle correction and repeatability checks.
  • Daily hydraulic, lubrication, tooling and guarding inspection.
  • Alarm documentation and support escalation.

Training does not replace the employer's safety program, safeguarding assessment or operator authorization.

Not Automatically Included

  • Freight, unloading, crane, forklift or machinery mover.
  • Building electrical work, permits, foundation or floor repair.
  • Additional tooling not listed in the quote.
  • Unlimited programming or development of every customer part.
  • Return travel caused by incomplete buyer-controlled site readiness.
